CAN AN ELECTRIC MATTRESS PAD BURN THE HOUSE DOWN?
Sliding into a toasty warm bed feels fantastic on a cold winter night! But that electric mattress pad under the fitted sheet can cause death, great physical harm or even a burned down house if safety precautions are not observed.
Quite popular in Israel where central heating is not as common as in the US, many Israelis purchase an electric mattress pad that covers about 2/3’s of the bed. Yet tragically, houses have burned down and people injured due to not knowing how to use them safely.
You can be warm and safe by practicing the following:
- Always check your electric mattress pads before using them every season. Most accidents are caused by pads that are worn and old and timers that are old or not functioning properly.
- Make sure the cord is not frayed or damaged.
- Do not use the electric mattress pad around flammable objects, including a plastic mattress or pillow cover.
- Never use an extension cord, even a heavy duty one that can overheat and explode into a fire.
- Not only is it important to turn off the switch before getting into bed, but it is crucial to unplug the cord from the wall, cutting off the current and potentially preventing a fire.
