The inspiration for this article came during shabbat lunch, as I was marveling at how much I was enjoying the Tepperberg Sangiovese wine I had purchased for NIS 40.
I decided a few months ago that I was done with fancy wines. That decision came, ironically, after a period where I got to drink a lot of really fancy hundred-shekel wines over a few months. Some were very good, but I was surprised at how many weren’t really very good at all.
At the same time, I started trusting my wine guy Evyatar Cohen more and more to recommend good inexpensive wines, and I liked what I was tasting. Every time, I would go into Evyatar’s Kos Shel Bracha Wine Shop on Lamed Hey Street in the German Colony, I would ask for a good bottle of red in the NIS 30-40 range, and I was generally happy with the results.
That Sangiovese from Tepperberg’s Inspiration line was one of Evyatar’s suggestions. Following are a list of recommended Israeli wines, from Evyatar and other people on Facebook.
If you think of yourself as a serious wine drinker, you might feel insulted that I’m starting here, but if you aren’t a wine lover, this is all you need to know.Sparkling Muscato white wines like Buzz cost around NIS 30, and taste like alcoholic soda-pop. A pleasure.
Following are the red wines that people recommended. Ones in bold were either recommended by multiple people or have my personal approval.
