Children robbed of a carefree childhood arrive at Foster Care Homes with multiple situational losses, power struggles and other complex issues. These children often resort to survival mode or various coping mechanisms opting to act out behaviours they deem necessary for their survival. The foster care parent becomes the “psychological parent” in recognition of the fact that children form attachments with those who regularly meet their physical and emotional needs, regardless of biological relationships. The foster care parent becomes the most crucial caretaker to help this foster care child transition from their separation and loss towards stability, a sense of permanence, structure, and consistency.
Often beginning foster parents experience a high degree of ambivalence and anxiety. Whatever the configuration, a foster family goes through a disorganization/reorganization settling experience with their foster child. Realignment is the process in which family members adjust their roles and behaviors and incorporate new ones to benefit the needs and reality of the foster child. When a family is unable to realign, disruption of the placement may occur. This often takes place when accommodation proves to be too much of a burden for the family. Families who can realign have the willingness to look inward, adapt to the unexpected,
