In our previous meeting we touched upon the circumstances that led to the mass immigration from Eastern Europe to America (1870-1924), and "accompanied" the immigrants in their struggles to cross the Atlantic Ocean. In this lecture Professor Kimmy Caplan will address some of the main challenges that Jewish immigrants faced upon their arrival, and time permitting, also the grand attempt at organizing New York's Orthodox congregations under the leadership of Rabbi Jacob Joseph, an adventure that failed.
Prof. Kimmy Caplan teaches in the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University. His field of scholarly interest is Jewish religious history in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a focus on religious trends, popular religion, sermons, and homiletic literature.
