Thousands of runners and tens of thousands of spectators are expected to participate in Israel's biggest annual sports event.
Tens of thousands of participants are expected to take part in the Tel Aviv Marathon on Friday, Israel’s biggest sports event of the year.
Hundreds of runners from around the world, including 12 elite athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco and elsewhere, will compete, aiming to break the existing Tel Aviv Marathon record of 02:10:11, set in 2023 by Kenyan runner Mibei Dominic Kipngeno.
The competition, which is expected to be attended by some 45,000 participants and is being held for the 16th year, will embrace the themes of resilience and unity following the 15-month long war against Hamas in Gaza.
"The Tel Aviv Marathon ... is more than just a race—it embodies resilience, unity and determination,” said Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai. “This year, we run with a heavy heart for those still in captivity and in memory of our fallen heroes. We salute our soldiers, the wounded and their families, who inspire us all.”
Participants can choose from seven race categories, including the 26.2 mile marathon, 13 mile half marathon, 6.2 and 3.1 mile routes and a dedicated 1.9 mile “Triumph of the Spirit” route. There is also a handcycle race for athletes with disabilities. Additionally, a Mini Marathon for children will be held on Feb. 26, including a special 0.2 mile race for children with special needs.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and seasonable for the race, with highs in the mid 60s.
