WBAIS
Established under the auspices of the American Embassy in 1958, The Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel (WBAIS) is a MSA accredited, fully independent, co-educational day and boarding EY-12 international school, which offers a robust program leading to a US high school diploma.
WBAIS encompasses two campuses, AIS in Even Yehuda and JAIS in Jerusalem. In 2008, AIS moved to its current 19-acre campus in Even Yehuda, a residential community approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv. The purpose-built campus includes four separate divisions, a performing arts building with a 400-seat auditorium, full gym, cafeteria, library and media center, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, and an olympic-sized pool.
With a present enrollment of approximately 585 students representing over 40 nationalities, AIS Israel is a diverse and vibrant community. Approximately 30% of WBAIS students are American, 40% from countries all over the world, and 30% Israeli.
Introduction
The Walworth Barbour American International School Even Yehuda campus is seeking a Library Assistant who will play a key role in delivering excellent services to the AIS community. The ideal candidate will maintain the welcoming, supportive, and collegial atmosphere of the Library Media Center, while demonstrating outstanding customer service skills and the ability to engage effectively with children. This individual will be a friendly and approachable presence, fostering a positive environment for learning and exploration.
Applicants must be available to work alternating early and late shifts (some days starting at 07:30 and some days ending at 17:15). Applicants must have an Israeli work visa (or be able to obtain one) or be an Israeli citizen.
Main Responsibilities
General Responsibilities:
● Use Destiny, the library online catalog, to:
○ perform daily circulation operations;
○ prepare holds and send messages to patrons;
○ oversee and maintain patron accounts (circulation records), including registration of new patrons;
○ print out overdue reports and send them to library patrons;
○ communicate important information to library patrons in an effective way (email messages or other);
○ perform other operations as necessary to maintain a smooth circulation system.
● Organize and maintain library resources and facilities, which include: shelving books, periodicals, and AV equipment; reading shelves for correct book order and location; repairing items, and maintaining a clean, functional and inviting library environment.
● Schedule the use and circulation of library equipment, textbooks, and facilities.
● Process library items (barcoding, stamping, labeling, wrapping books).
● Track, distribute, and organize periodical subscriptions.
● Performing readers’ advisory services when requested such as book recommendations, book talks, book displays, etc.
● Prepare creative displays.
● Assist with special library events.
● Sort and process general book donations.
● Assist in the selection and ordering of library materials.
● Record monetary transactions for lost or damaged items, community memberships, or special events (book sales) and reporting them to the Head Librarian.
● Provide occasional coverage for Elementary School library classes as needed.
● Perform related duties as assigned.
Digital Collections:
● Assist patrons in using the library catalog and digital resources (e.g. library databases and digital subscriptions)
● Download Kindle books on Kindle devices, and manage their distribution as necessary.
● Maintain audio collection distribution system and organize audio books as required.
● Maintain the school’s video server (EMBY).
● Assist Head Librarian in tracking the use of the databases and suggest ways to promote their use
● Maintain the library TV slides to promote the library resources and activities.
● Assist with maintaining the AIS Library website.
Audio-Visual equipment:
● Prepare and monitor AV equipment (e.g., doc cameras, microphones, etc).
● Support faculty, staff and students in the use of AV equipment
Skills
● Excellent customer service skills
● Good skills in library management systems
● Understanding of circulation tasks in order to efficiently organize library resources and assist students and staff in locating materials
● Knowledge and appreciation of K-12 and adult literature
● Excellent communications skills in English
Knowledge
● Good knowledge of library science principles, including classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal Classification), and best practices in library organization.
● Familiarity with digital library resources (online databases, e-books, and electronic devices commonly used in educational settings).
Judgment
● Demonstrates sound judgment in addressing library-related challenges and issues that may arise, such as resolving circulation discrepancies, troubleshooting technical issues, and handling student behavior incidents.
Accountability
● Is accountable for recommending the selection, acquisition, and deselection of library materials, to ensure that the AIS library collection meets the needs and interests of our school community.
● He/she is accountable for assisting students and staff with research inquiries and recommending reading materials.
Required Qualifications
● High English speaking skills both oral and written
● Prior experience working in a library or school setting preferred
● Minimum of BA or Associate’s Degree.

This is a physically demanding position and applicants must be comfortable sitting, standing, and squatting, lifting and carrying stacks of books, and pushing and pulling heavy carts and trolleys of boxes of books.
