Kupat Holim "Mashlim" or Private Health Insurance?
Which really protects you?
You hear about this topic almost daily. Is the advanced care medical insurance offered through an Israeli sick fund (kupat holim) adequate enough to take care of you should you need major surgery or other important medical care? What are the advantages of a private health insurance plan over the sick fund's advanced or "mashlim" health care program?
People living in Israel face the dilemma of which health insurance plan is best for them in today's changing medical care environment. The major Israeli sick funds have recently embarked on a campaign to entice more people to join them, with many people not realizing that the cover offered by these plans can leave much to be desired. While membership in a sick fund is fine for normal day to day medical needs, including laboratory tests, medications, and other non critical medical problems, the real 'nitty gritty' becomes evident when a person needs major surgery, including organ transplants; or other serious medical care, including what is known as Long Term Care.
Most people only discover this the hard way when they learn that they need a major medical procedure or surgery performed, and are then at the mercy of a government or sick fund affiliated hospital which usually results in painful bureaucratic hassle and long waits to have the procedure performed –often without any choice of which surgeon or physician is performing it!
This only strengthens the case in favor of taking out a private health care insurance plan for yourself and your family through a well known and respected Israeli insurance company; a plan that lets you, the insured, choose your own physician and hospital with much less red tape and waiting time for needed surgical procedures. This also applies for surgery performed outside of Israel, if required.
Maurice Picow, an agent representative of Menorah Insurance Company Ltd, one of the country's oldest and most respected companies in the Life and Health insurance field, can show you the advantages of enrolling in a fully comprehensive health insurance plan that not only covers you for major medical insurance problems, but for a large number of other medical needs as well. Some of these include consultations with a wider choice of specialists, alternative medicine treatments, and prescriptions for medications which are not included in the 'sal' or basket of sick fund approved medications (until N.S. 1,071,400 annual amount per person). This clause alone is vitally important for many people requiring certain medications to sustain their very lives.
