“This is an appropriate and necessary change to ensure that all faith communities across Los Angeles are able to access these funds,” said a council member.

The Los Angeles City Council will vote on July 31 on whether to grant $2 million to protect religious communities in the city.

The vote would replace legislation calling for $1 million specifically for Jewish institutions, following antisemitic protests at a Los Angeles synagogue, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Anti-Israel protesters targeted the council’s June 26 meeting discussing the original proposal, per the Times. The paper reported that Katy Yaroslavsky introduced the initial legislation and supported the change.

“I believe this is an appropriate and necessary change to ensure that all faith communities across Los Angeles are able to access these funds while also addressing the urgent need to increase the security of Jewish institutions,” the Jewish council member said.
