A new mamad (State-Religious) elementary school "Be'er" opened this past fall in Jerusalem's French Hill neighborhood. The school is a first-of-kind Hevrati (social) school with small classes, which emphasizes the total development of the child, fostering independence while providing top-notch education in kodesh and chol subjects.
As part of the daily program, the children do the dishes, take care of the garden, and are given an active role in conflict resolution. In addition, the children are active participats in parent-teacher meetings. The emphasis on hands on Torah learning is modeled after Reisheit, the elementary school in Kiryat Yovel from which Be’er’s school principal Orit Lasser hails.
The innovative school is a joint project of a group of families from the French Hill neighborhood who work in the nearby Hebrew University Mount Scopus campus, Hadassah Har Hatzofim Hospital, and Har Hotzvim hi-tech park, in a joint effort together with the Jerusalem municipality and the local community center.
Be’er will have separate classes for boys and girls after grade 3. Next academic year there are openings for students in First and Second Grade. Interested parents should contact the principal directly for more information or to coordinate a visit.
