If you do plan on attending, it would greatly appreciated if you might bring the correct change. Thanks so much.
I am pleased to announce the next Movie Matinee at Beit Knesset Hanassi. On Tuesday, January 21 we will present GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT.
This film classic is considered one of the best movies ever made.
Gregory Peck portrays a Christian journalist wishing to report on anti-Semitism. He pretends he is Jewish in order to experience prejudice firsthand. He is shocked by what he discovers.
What is a “gentleman’s agreement”? The term is a euphemism. There are various types of bigotry. There is the raw, “blue collar” racism. There is the subtle, “I'm not prejudiced. Some of my best friends are Jewish, Black, Latino, fill in the blank” while refusing members of these ethnic groups entry to the clubs, schools and universities and so forth and denying them an employment position or blocking their purchase of homes near you. This film addresses the latter form of bigotry which also carries with it economic harm.
A “gentleman’s agreement” is akin to a conspiracy. It is that “wink” to fellow bigots to perpetuate prejudice in the subtle ways that hurt just as much, if not more, as the in-your-face bigotry.
This film demonstrates that “white collar” bigotry better than any other depiction of it.
The film was nominated for EIGHT Academy Awards. It won three including Best Picture. This is an excellent and important film.
The Movie Matinee is at 2:00. The film is two hours in length. There are English subtitles. In addition, there will be a brief introduction of the film, a short talk and discussion after the screening.
There will be refreshments. No reservations are required. Beit Knesset Hanassi is located at 24 Ussishkin Street. The admission is 20 shekels for members of the shul and 30 shekels for non-members.
